Step 1: Prep the Cord Before You Knot
The single most important step when working with metallic cord is the prep stage. Skip this and you will spend your entire knotting session fighting the material.
Unwind from the center, not the outside. Most metallic cord rolls have a center pull end. Find it and use it. Pulling cord from the outside of a roll causes it to spin and twist as you pull, which introduces torsion and accelerates kinking.
Let it hang free. After cutting your cord lengths, hang them vertically from your dowel or ring for two to three minutes before you start knotting. Gravity pulls out the spool coil shape. This step alone removes most of the kinking problem.

Seal the ends immediately after cutting. Before you even mount the cord, apply a tiny drop of clear fabric glue to each cut end. Let it dry for two minutes. This prevents ply separation from the moment you start handling the cord.
Step 2: Mounting Without Introducing Twist
How you mount metallic cord onto your dowel or ring matters more than with cotton cord. Cotton is forgiving of mounting twist — metallic cord is not.
Use a standard lark’s head knot to mount, but pay attention to the orientation. Both halves of the cord should face the same direction before you tighten the lark’s head. If one half is twisted relative to the other, the whole length will have a built-in spin that causes problems later.
For ring-based projects, mount slowly and check each lark’s head before moving to the next. Rushing the mounting stage is where most metallic cord tangles begin.
Step 3: Knotting Technique Adjustments
Once you are knotting, a few technique adjustments make metallic cord much easier to manage.
Grip from the base. When picking up a working cord to tie a knot, grip it from right above the last knot, not from the tip. Pulling from the tip puts stress on the ply twist at the worst possible point — the middle of a long loose section — and encourages separation.
Use steady, even tension. Metallic cord does not respond well to jerky or inconsistent tension. Slow, smooth pulls produce cleaner knots than fast ones. Square knots tied with controlled, even tension stay crisp; rushed square knots can leave the metallic surface looking kinked.
Keep working sections short. If you have very long cord lengths, bundle the excess and secure it loosely with a slip knot or bundle clip. Working with 80cm of active cord is manageable; working with 200cm of loose metallic cord invites tangles.
Do not over-tighten. Metallic cord looks best with knots pulled firmly but not crushed. Over-tightening compresses the metallic surface and reduces sheen. You want the knot tight enough to hold its position, not squeezed flat.
Step 4: Managing Loose Plies Mid-Project
Even with good prep, you may encounter ply separation mid-project — especially on longer cord lengths where handling is heavier. Here is how to address it without undoing your work.
If a section of cord starts to unply, hold the cord at the unplied section and twist it back together in the direction of the original ply. Then grip it firmly and work the knot. The friction of the knot itself will help re-seat the plies.
A very light mist of water on a separating section can temporarily increase grip between plies. This works particularly well for the 3-ply metallic cord — the moisture gives the plies just enough friction to hold while you complete the knot.
If the separation is significant and at the end of a working cord, trim back past the separation zone, re-seal the new end, and continue. A little lost cord length is better than fighting a fraying section through multiple knots.
Step 5: Finishing Ends Cleanly
Finishing ends on metallic cord requires more care than cotton. Cotton frays predictably and evenly; metallic cord frays unevenly, with the metallic strands often sticking out at odd angles even after trimming.
The clean finish method:
- Trim the cord end to the desired length with sharp scissors
- Apply a small drop of clear fabric glue or Fray Check to the cut end
- Press the plies together gently with your fingers
- Let dry completely before handling
Do not use a lighter or heat gun on metallic cord. The metallic coating is heat-sensitive and will melt or discolor before the core material is sealed, leaving a stiff, shiny blob that looks worse than a raw frayed end.

Common Metallic Cord Mistakes
Buying too much too fast. Metallic cord is not cheap, and technique matters more with this material than with cotton. Start with the petite 100m roll to learn the material before committing to a full project quantity.
Using metallic cord for structural elements. Metallic cord is a decorative material. Do not use it for the structural parts of a plant hanger that will hold a heavy pot, or for any piece where the cord is load-bearing over time. The metallic coating does not add strength, and the core cord is typically thinner than an equivalent all-cotton cord at the same diameter.
Skipping end-sealing. Every cut end on a metallic cord project needs to be sealed. Every one. Unsealed metallic ends will fray within days of handling and can leave metallic filaments caught in adjacent knots.
Working in low light. This sounds minor, but metallic cord tangles are hard to spot until they are already knotted. Work in good light so you can see the cord orientation clearly before each knot.
